Description
"Remembering When" by Karyn Robinson
This is a painting of a woman I saw on the Oceanside Pier in California, but I could have found her anywhere the Sea stirs up memories.
I watched her carefully. That's what artists do. We don't just paint pictures, we strive to capture moments.
The ocean has such a powerful effect on people. For the young it's mere background noise, and something to dash in and out of, but for others, it's a vehicle transporting them to another place and time.
I hope it was a happy memory the Sea stirred up for my friend on the pier; a handsome husband, a few young children, and a boat taking them all on a grand adventure.
The gift of the Sea is memory, which she happily delivers like sea shells on the shore.
My approach to this painting was inspired by David Hockney, a British born artist who also found inspiration in California.

PS...I just visited your collections briefly and I noticed this was originally a photograph/ plus digital. I like it SO MUCH better as a painting. The simplification and additional white makes it so much more powerful!
Karyn Robinson replied:
I agree, Claudia. It took me a while to believe I could do it justice. This is my favorite painting I've done. I'm glad I took the time to think about it! Thanks for your comment!

Karyn...I just love your painting and your writing. The colors and lines are superb, but it's mostly the ability you gave me to be her for a few serene moments. l/f/pod for 2/14

Great blue and yellow background colors off set by Black and White subject. Huge interest in the juxtaposition of the horizontal straight lines with the vertical and curving figure...great! And yet a simplicity to the overall image. My POD for 2/14.
