Description
There was an old apple tree in our neighborhood which stood on an undeveloped lot. A wonderful old tree which had not been pruned or 'managed'. It was everything a kid wanted; great for climbing with an endless food supply. I can still smell that scent I now associate with wine coming from the few pieces of fruit that dropped to the ground and would begin to decay.
In elementary school we had to choose a poem to memorize and recite for the class. I do not recall the title, but I remember a few lines:
The wise old apple tree in Spring, though split and hollow wears a crown
of such fantastic blossomings, we can not let them cut it down.
It bears no fruit but honeybees prefer it much to other trees.
The orchard man he chalks his mark and says 'this empty shell must go'.
We nod and rub it off the bark as soon as he goes down the row.
Each Spring he looks bewildered 'Queer, I thought I marked this tree last year.'
It was my ode to the old apple tree we all loved. We lived in a subdivision and my parents were not gardeners so picking my own food straight off a tree was a delight of which I never tired. In my later years my husband and I moved from Ohio to Arizona and we have an orange tree in the yard. We harvest that fruit in December and with every tug on the branches I remember my dearly loved apple tree from so many years ago. Green apples, just like these.
