Artist's Description

Karyn Robinson, Gilbert, Arizona

Chile peppers are everywhere in the southwest. If we're not eating them we're decorating our homes with strands of dried chiles which are called 'ristras.'

I think they are very pretty but you need to respect this vegetable. Improper handling can get you in trouble very quickly. The degree of heat will vary from pepper to pepper and if you're not sure and you know the variety you can consult the Scoville scale.

The Scoville scale is the measurement of the pungency (spicy heat) of chile peppers or other spicy foods as reported in Scoville heat units (SHU),[1] a function of capsaicin concentration The scale is named after its creator, American pharmacist Wilbur Scoville. His method, devised in 1912, is known as the Scoville Organoleptic Test.

This is my favorite way to enjoy a chile; in a frame on my kitchen wall. I like to keep things simple and the black background sets off the firery red and orange tones nicely....

In addition to her contemporary take on southwestern art, Robinson enjoys painting abstracts, unusual objects (check out her robot painting, A Boy and His Dog) and capturing people at play. "Sometimes I feel that there is not enough time in the day to paint everything I want to paint. I'm so captivated by this wonderful, beautiful world. If I can just continue to paint and share my work with...
