'28 South Carlsbad' is just one of hundreds of lifeguard towers that dot the California coastline. The lifeguards are heroes watching over all of us beach goers who can find endless ways of getting into trouble.
I was attracted to these towers because of their design. They look like spacecraft to me, and perhaps that is fitting since the depths of the oceans are truly the last great frontier. We know less about the deep than we do outer space.
In this painting I've captured the sun setting over the Pacific ocean and reflected in the tower's wide, glass window. The sky has turned to a rich indigo blue and the sunlight is bringing out all the warm tones in the rocks that line the shore.
Robinson grew up in the midwest and has lived in Arizona with her husband Jeff for more than 25 years. "When we moved to the southwest I was immediately taken with the desert's exotic beauty. Where some see only rocks and dirt, I see majesty. I love the sculptural shapes of the cacti and the way light and shadow plays on their forms." In addition to her contemporary take on southwestern art, Robinson enjoys painting abstracts, unusual objects (check out her robot painting, A Boy and His Dog) and capturing people at play.
