Artist's Description

If Mermaids are the royalty of the sea their castles must be adorned in abalone shell.

Abalone is the ocean's treasure and the favorite food of otters. The cream colored outer shell gives no clue as to the miracle of color that lies within; iridescent blues, pinks and purples shine so incredibly brightly. It's an unbelievable world of color.

The shells of abalones are characterized by several open respiratory holes in a row near the shell's outer edge. The thick inner layer of the shell is composed of nacre or mother-of-pearl.

The shells are collected by many and used as decorative objects, jewelry, and as a source of colorful mother-of-pearl.

Karyn Robinson, Gilbert, Arizona.

It's easy to get lost in this work. My mind just travels through the pastel colors. It's almost like the abalone was an artist, looking up at the sky through the water and said that's how I'm going to paint my shell. And she did.

Karyn Robinson

Robinson grew up in the midwest and has lived in Arizona with her husband Jeff for more than 25 years. "When we moved to the southwest I was immediately taken with the desert's exotic beauty. Where some see only rocks and dirt, I see majesty. I love the sculptural shapes of the cacti and the way light and shadow plays on their forms." In addition to her contemporary take on southwestern art, Robinson enjoys painting abstracts, unusual objects (check out her robot painting, A Boy and His Dog) and capturing people at play. "Sometimes I feel that there is not enough time in the day to paint everything I want to paint. I'm so captivated by this wonderful, beautiful world. If I can just continue to paint and share my work with...
