I like painting Koi and I think they are beautiful and interesting fish. I know people who have ponds and their fish almost act like dogs; coming when they are called and happily acknowledging their owners.
The pond I painted here includes both the shallows and a deeper section. You can see the sunlight falling on the shallows and making patterns on the boulders. The sun is also casting shadows of the fish and the lily pads. Water droplets have accumulated on the lily pads too.
The word koi comes from Japanese, simply meaning "carp". It includes both the dull grey fish and the brightly colored varieties. What are known as koi in English are referred to more specifically as nishikigoi in Japan (literally meaning "brocaded carp"). In Japanese, koi is a homophone for another word that means "affection" or "love"; koi are therefore symbols of love and friendship in Japan.

Where some see only rocks and dirt, I see majesty. I love the sculptural shapes of the cacti and the way light and shadow plays on their forms." In addition to her contemporary take on southwestern art, Robinson enjoys painting abstracts, unusual objects (check out her robot painting, A Boy and His Dog) and capturing people at play. "Sometimes I feel that there is not enough time in the day to paint everything I want to paint. I'm so captivated by this wonderful, beautiful world. If I can just continue to paint and share my work with...
