Description
This is an architectural detail from the Grady Gammage Auditorium on the campus of Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona. Originally designed as an opera house to be built in Bagdad, Iraq, it was instead built in Arizona and is now the largest university-based presenters of performing arts in the world.
ASU President Grady Gammage had a mission to create a distinct university auditorium in 1957. Close friend and famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright was asked to assist with the project.
Wright worked on the sketches for the building during the last two years of his life. His most trusted aide, William Welsey Peters, brought his plans to finished form. Wright served as architect and the building's bold design is his.
Both Wright and Gammage died before the structure was completed.
It took 25 months to complete the construction of the $2.46 million building. ASU Gammage was completed in September 1964. It remains the only public building in Arizona designed by Wright.
