"That Man on the Beach" by Karyn Robinson.
I am a huntress who chases down her prey. Case in point...last year Jeff and I were riding bikes near the Santa Monica pier when I saw a man in a business suit take off across the beach.
The beach? A place to play. The pier? A place to have fun. A man in a suit trudging across the beach, his Brunello Cucinelli shoes filling with sand, just seemed out of place, and to my artist's eye, perfect.
I ditched the bike, grabbed my phone, and took off running. The image I captured wasn't great, but it gave me the information I needed.
I'd love to know why he was there, what he was looking for, and what he was thinking. But that's the great thing about art. As the viewer, you get to decide.
My approach to this painting was inspired by David Hockney, a British born artist who also found inspiration in California.
Robinson grew up in the midwest and has lived in Arizona with her husband Jeff for more than 25 years. "When we moved to the southwest I was immediately taken with the desert's exotic beauty. Where some see only rocks and dirt, I see majesty. I love the sculptural shapes of the cacti and the way light and shadow plays on their forms." In addition to her contemporary take on southwestern art, Robinson enjoys painting abstracts, unusual objects (check out her robot painting, A Boy and His Dog) and capturing people at play.
