Van Gogh had two favorite flowers of which I'm aware, sunflowers and Irises. Van Gogh had good taste in flowers in my opinion.
When choosing subset matter, an artist looks for a variety of things including shape and color. No wonder he chose Irises for one of his paintings. The flower's shape is unique and it's color, bold. I might be drawn to paint some stems as well.
In this work, the stems are arranged in an art deco style vase. Some of the delicate blooms have dropped to the bowl and table below. A reminder that all beauty can fade and to enjoy it, in all its glory while you can.
Robinson grew up in the midwest and has lived in Arizona with her husband Jeff for more than 25 years. "When we moved to the southwest I was immediately taken with the desert's exotic beauty. Where some see only rocks and dirt, I see majesty. I love the sculptural shapes of the cacti and the way light and shadow plays on their forms." In addition to her contemporary take on southwestern art, Robinson enjoys painting abstracts, unusual objects (check out her robot painting, A Boy and His Dog) and capturing people at play.
